Long before it became a staple, the saddlebag carried the hopes and belongings of the cowboys, natives, explorers, and trappers of the American frontier.

Traditionally, Lakota riders secured parfleche, painted pouches usually made of Buffalo hide, to their saddles. They were durable, decorated, and provided means for carrying provisions. Meanwhile, frontiersman slung weathered saddlebags over their horses as “trailside drawers” to store jerky, tools, and spare clothing. Those early saddlebags were rugged and practical, often with a simple flap or tie down closure to keep rain off their belongings. Overtime, as railroads and roads connected the West to the world, the saddlebag left the horse’s flank and found a new place at our side. 

Today’s cross body bag can be traced back to the Old West carryalls - reimagined for modern needs. The Heritage Turquoise Saddlebag is hand-tooled in the Sheridan style, hallmarked by intricate roses, flowering vines, and leaf motifs born from the cattle country of Wyoming in the 1950’s. The leather itself is the finest full-grain, vegetable tanned hide, famed for its high-quality and durability. Vegetable tanning is an old-world process that uses natural tannins that not only withstands years of use but also patinas beautifully—telling the tale of your trails.

Leather Care & Longevity

Your leather bag will only get better with time. To maintain your saddlebag, wipe down the leather with a soft dry or slightly damp cloth. Condition it with a quality leather balm every few months to maintain suppleness, and store it in a cool, dry place out of direct sunlight. Over time, your saddlebag will develop a darker, richer patina – a sought-after hallmark of high-quality leather.
