Lessons from the Land: A Conversation with Kristy Titus
This week on the Creative Mountain Mama Podcast, I had the absolute joy of sitting down with Kristy Titus—hunter, conservationist, lifelong outdoorswoman, and an inspiration to so many women stepping into the wild for the first time. After a year of back-and-forths, we finally made it happen. And let me tell you, it was well worth the wait!
Kristy is a powerful voice in the hunting and conservation community—not just because of her skills, but because of her mindset. She’s built her life on discipline, faith, and an unwavering commitment to self-reliance. From raising and training mules on her Wyoming ranch to producing her own TV and podcast content, Kristy does it all with intentionality and grit.
Building Confidence as a Woman in the Outdoors
One of the most inspiring takeaways from our conversation was Kristy’s passion for helping women feel empowered in the field. Whether you're a seasoned hunter or an “adult onset hunter” (yep, we’re claiming that title proudly now), Kristy believes that we all deserve the tools, community, and confidence to harvest our own food and reconnect with the land.
She talked about:
- Hosting OnX watch parties to learn navigation skills
- Creating safe spaces for women to learn to shoot and hunt
- The importance of finding trusted mentors whose ethos aligns with yours
Her advice? Start with one skill, set a goal, and work backward. That’s how you build confidence in the field—and in life.
The Power of Extreme Ownership
Kristy lives by a code that really resonated with me: extreme ownership. If something goes wrong in the woods, it’s not bad luck—it’s a sign to evaluate, take responsibility, and prepare better next time. That kind of personal accountability doesn’t just make you a better hunter, it makes you a stronger human.
And the beautiful thing is—it’s not about perfection. It’s about showing up, doing the hard work, and trusting the process. Whether it’s minus 20 degrees and you’re training mules, or life feels messy and overwhelming, we are called to steward what we’ve been given well.
Homesteading, Hunting, and the Gift of Stillness
As moms, wives, homesteaders, and business owners, we often carry the weight of the world on our shoulders. Kristy reminded me how vital it is to carve out quiet—moments where we return to the wild and let the noise fade.
The outdoors has a way of recalibrating the soul. It's not just about harvesting animals or filling a tag—it’s about healing. It’s about remembering who we are, who God is, and what matters most.
If You’re Just Getting Started...
If you’ve ever wanted to hunt, shoot, or just be more confident outside, this episode is for you. Kristy offers a wealth of resources—from Hunter Ed to Project ChildSafe, and even a jewelry line designed to help women remember the wild moments that shaped them.
And as she said so well: You don’t need to have a ranch. You just need to get outside. Go for a walk. Watch the sunrise. Listen for the birds. Reconnect.
